DIY String Art for Fall

These Halloween string art cards are SO FUN and require only a few simple supplies. Choose a Halloween template and form the shape with embroidery floss. It’s so cool to see each card come together in a unique way!

With string art, every card is different, even if you’re using the same shapes and colours. You can make your Halloween card creepy or cute – it’s all up to you and the template you choose!

Kids can also have a lot of fun making these cards, since the pattern is totally random. If you’re worried about them using a needle, simply give them a plastic embroidery needle and they’re all set!

Where can I get Halloween templates?

We have pumpkin templates and bat outlines that you can download and print for free! For these string art cards we used the small pumpkin outline #1 and the small bat #2. For the Halloween cat I downloaded a free clip art and resized it to 60% scale in Microsoft Word.

You can find so many free templates online by doing a Google search. Simply search for a Halloween shape like “witch hat” and then add “outline”, “template”, or “printable” to the end of your search term.

What type of paper do I need?

If you’re making your own card (rather than buying blank cards), you need to use cardstock, a paper thick enough that it won’t rip when you stitch through it. We used 65lb cardstock to make our cards and it worked well, but it did bend fairly easily.

If you want paper that’s a bit more sturdy you can buy 80lb cardstock.

What if I don’t have embroidery floss?

If you don’t have embroidery floss you can use yarn or crochet cotton. We made our first string art cards with yarn and they looked really nice – the string was just thicker and fuzzier than the embroidery floss.

  • Bring the needle back through another hole on the stem. Come up from the bottom to the next hole and go back to continue making a stem outline.

  • Once the stem is outlined, go across the front in a criss cross pattern. You can choose the pattern you like – it doesn’t matter what holes you come from or go to.

  • Once you’ve made a pattern on the stem that you’re happy with, finish on the inside of the card and tape the thread into place, cutting off any extra.

Step 4: Add insert to card

  • Cut a piece of printer paper to 6-1/2 by 9-1/2 inches and fold it in half.If you’re using a different size of card, cut the paper to be 1/2 inch smaller than your card dimensions, so that there’s 1/4 inch of space on each side.

  • Use double sided tape or glue tape to attach the insert inside the card.

  • Write your Halloween message inside of the card.

  • Your Halloween string art card is complete!

Helpful Tip:

Try not to cut your orange thread too long. You’ll need to start new thread at least once, but the thread will knot too easily if you work with a longer piece of thread.Download and print our pumpkin templates for free!
