DIY No-Sew Halloween Plushies: Easy Craft Tutorial

No-Sew Halloween Plushies

I used to love sewing, I really did. But somehow with kids, I just don’t seem to have the time to sew anything more than the arms, wings, legs, etc. that annoyingly fall off the the made-in-china stuffed animals my kids smother with love.

Which is why I LOVE using glue guns to make things like these plushies. It’s SO EASY – and the best part – my kids are seriously amazed by my amazingly awesome plushie making skills when I’m done. Seriously, they are so impressed. I don’t bother telling them how easy these plushies are to make!

What can I use to stuff the plushies?

We used cotton balls to stuff these plushies. Each plushie needs about 8 to 10 regular sized cotton balls (mine are just from the dollar store). Just make sure you pull apart the cotton balls before you stuff them in – otherwise your plushie will be lumpy.

You can also use the stuffing from an old, flattened pillow. You know those old pillows that are too flat to use, but you feel too guilty to throw them away? They’re great for crafts! Cut open an end and use the stuffing to fill your plushie.

How did you get the blue outline around the ghost?

I used a blue Sharpie to outline all the edges of the ghost when I was done making it. Just to make it pop more.

The Sharpie is permanent and doesn’t come off onto your hands. You can even use a Sharpie to draw the faces onto the plushies if you don’t want to cut out felt pieces for each face.

Do I have to use a glue gun?

I recommend using a glue gun because it’s easier than sewing. If you’re not comfortable with a hot glue gun, check your craft store for a low temperature glue gun. You can find them on Amazon here.

White glue and most other types of crafting glue will not work.

If you love sewing, feel free to sew these little guys! But I recommend keeping the stitches on the outside. The felt tends to look really bulky when you sew it, and turn it inside out to hide the seams.

Is glue from a glue gun really strong enough to hold felt together?

Yes! The glue from a glue gun sticks felt together really really well. Unless you’re really good at sewing, I would say it’s even stronger than using thread and sewing it.

How to Make No-Sew Halloween Plushies

Made with felt and a glue gun – No sewing skills required!

Materials:

Felt(orange, brown, black and green)
8-10Cotton balls

Step 1: Cut out the pieces

After printing out the template, cut out the Halloween shape(s) you plan to use as your pattern.
Using a gel pen or marker (a regular pen or pencil won’t show up on the felt), carefully trace the paper pattern shape two times on the felt.
Cut out the felt pumpkin shapes. When making the pumpkin, also cut out a small brown stem and a green leaf.

Step 2: Glue it together

Using a glue gun, add a small line of glue, about 1/2 inch long at the top of the pumpkin shape where the stem will go.
Carefully press the stem onto the glue.
Squeeze about a 2 inch long line of glue from the glue gun around the edge of the pumpkin shape, keeping the glue about 1/4 inch from the edge.
Carefully line up the pumpkin shape and press it onto the line of glue.
Pull back the top layer of felt. Starting as close as possible to where you left off, squeeze another 2 inch long line of glue from the glue gun around the edge of the pumpkin shape, again keeping the glue about 1/4 inch from the edge. Make sure the 2 pumpkin shapes are lined up, then press the top layer of felt onto the glue.
Continue adding 2 inch lines of glue from the glue gun, working your way around the edge of the shape. Leave yourself an opening that’s about 1.5 inches so you can fill it with stuffing.

Step 3: Stuff the plushie

Pull apart a cotton ball to fluff it up.
Then push the cotton ball into the unglued opening in the plushie. Continue pulling apart cotton balls and stuffing them into the plushie.
Use the eraser of a pencil to push the cotton balls inside the plushie, if needed. Make sure all the corners of the plushie are filled with the cotton ball stuffing.

Step 4: Glue it closed

If the cotton balls left lots of fluff on the felt around the opening, use painters tape or masking tape to pull it off before you glue it closed.
Squeeze a line of glue from the glue gun along the edge of the opening in the plushie.
Line up the 2 sides of the felt, then carefully press the 2 edges of the opening closed. Keep pinching it until the glue has dried (about 20 seconds).

Step 5: Make the face

Cut out a jack-o-lantern face from the black felt. For the ghost, cut out black eyes and a black mouth. For the bat, cut out red eyes.
Carefully pinch the pieces of the face and squeeze a small amount of glue from the glue gun onto them. Then press them in place onto the shape.
Your Halloween plushie is complete!

Repeat the steps to make a ghost and a bat plushie. You can even grab our leaf template here and make a leaf plushie.

See!? There’s zero sewing. None. It’s SUPER SIMPLE to make one of these little guys! Using a glue gun is easier (and much faster) than sewing, and it holds the felt together perfectly!
