Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Cut out the paper monster
- Fold a piece of construction paper in half.
- Cut along the fold line. Set one piece aside for another craft – you only need one half to make your monster.
- Fold the remaining paper in half.
- Draw half of a monster shape coming out from the fold line. (Whatever you draw will be half of your monster.)You can also draw your monster shape on the unfolded paper, but your monster won’t be symmetrical.
- With the paper still folded, cut out your monster shape.
- Open the paper to reveal your full monster!
Step 3: Decorate the paper monster
- Cut out a mouth shape from black construction paper. For this monster we made a half circle mouth.
- Cut small triangle shapes from white paper. These will be the monster’s teeth.
- Arrange the pieces of your monster face before gluing them into place, or make the monster up as you go.When you’re ready, add glue tape to one side of the monster’s mouth.
- Turn the mouth over and press it into place.
- Then glue on the monster’s teeth and add googly eyes, again using glue tape.
- Your paper monster craft is complete!

What paper is best for making this monster craft?
We like using construction paper for making these monsters. It’s inexpensive, there’s plenty of colours to choose from, and the paper adds a bit of texture to the monsters.
You can also use coloured printer paper or cardstock to make a super cute monster. You can even start with white paper and then colour the monsters with crayons, colored pencils, or markers.
What glue is used for these construction paper monsters?
We used glue tape (double sided tape that comes in a dispenser roll) to make our paper monsters. We love glue tape because it’s so easy to use and very low mess.
A glue stick would also work well. You can even use regular white glue, but then you’ll have to wait for it to dry.
How do I design my paper monsters?
The great thing about monsters is that you can make them look however you want! Here are some basic features that each monster can have:
- Basic body shape: Is your monster round, square, or even triangular? There are so many options for what your monster can look like. Does your monster have feet? If so, what do they look like?
- Facial features: Does your monster have a nose? And what type of mouth does it have? Decide if you’d like to draw the feature or cut it out of paper.
- Eyes: How many eyes does your monster have? What size are they? We used googly eyes of all different sizes, but you can also draw them!
- Extras: What else can you add to your paper monster? Try adding tentacles, spikes, or horns!
What else can I do with this paper monster craft?
Give your paper monster movable arms by attaching them with brads (aka paper fasteners). You could also add pipe cleaner tentacles by taping them to the back, or twisting them through a hole made by a single hole punch.
Turn your paper monsters into puppets by gluing them to popsicle sticks. Or attach them to a string garland with clothespins for a fun party or Halloween decoration!
Use your imagination to create a totally unique paper monster, or look to books and movies for inspiration. This craft is really simple for kids of all ages and a lot of fun to make! You’ll want to make a monster in every colour of the rainbow!
