Step 1: Find what you need

  • Gather your supplies and materials.

Step 2: Add paint to the inside of the wine glass

  • Prepare your workspace with a piece of parchment paper or newsprint — something you don’t mind paint dripping on. Wash out the inside of your wine glass. Once it’s clean and dry, add a generous squeeze of paint to the inside of the glass.

  • Turn the wine glass upside-down and turn it, swirling it around gently to spread the paint.Add more paint as necessary and keep turning the glass until the whole inside is covered with a thin layer of paint.

  • Keep the wine glass upside-down, letting the excess paint continue to drip out over top of the parchment paper.Tie a loop of twine around the stem of the wine glass and hang it from a cupboard handle, or somewhere out of the way, and let it dry for 24 hours.Carefully wipe the rim of the glass a few times as the paint starts to dry. This will ensure the paint has a clean edge.

  • Once you’re happy with the amount of flowers and leaves, add little berry accents. We cut up sprigs that came with our fall leaves.

Step 4: Add ribbon and twine to the candle

  • Now it’s time to decorate the candle. Cut a piece of burlap ribbon long enough to fit around your candle and glue it into place.

  • Cut 2 long pieces of twine (about 40 inches or so) and hold them together. Wrap the twine around the candle, in the center of the burlap, and then tie a bow. Trim the twine to be whatever length you’d like.

Helpful Tips:

  1. Make sure your wine glass is very clean before adding paint. Put rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and wipe the inside to remove any smudges or fingerprints.
  2. When adding the paint to the wine glass turn the glass slowly and carefully. If you shake it around too much the paint will splatter out.
  3. Painting the inside of the glass allows you to handle the candle holder without worrying about scratching the paint off when it’s done!

Where can I find an inexpensive wine glass to make these pumpkin wine glasses?

We bought our wine glasses at the dollar store. If your dollar store doesn’t have any, you can also check out local thrift stores!

For even more of a pumpkin look, try to find wine glasses that are more rounded. We would have preferred more rounded wine glasses, but these were the only ones our store carried.

What’s the best paint for making these fall wine glass candle holders?

We used the spiced pumpkin colour of the DecoArt Americana acrylic paint. The colour is a deep, pumpkin orange and it coated the inside of the glasses very well.

If you want to paint the outside of the glass, which will get handled, you may want to use an enamel paint or chalk paint.

Can I use a paintbrush to paint the inside of the wine glass pumpkins?

Yes, you can definitely use a paintbrush to paint the inside of the wine glasses. Glass is a difficult surface to paint on, though, and you can always see the brushstrokes, even with a foam brush, which we didn’t like.

Covering the inside of the glass with paint and then letting the extra drip out creates a nice, even coat of paint that looks super clean. It uses a lot more paint and takes longer to dry, so definitely choose whatever method works best for you!

What’s the best candle to use for these pumpkin wine glasses?

We used a short pillar candle so we could decorate around the outside of the candle as well. There are a lot of flammable materials on these wine glasses, so we consider them to be more decorative instead of candles that you actually burn.

If you plan to burn them, you’d need to eliminate any flammable materials on the candle itself and take precautions to make sure the candles don’t get knocked off the wine glass or tipped over.

You could also add a simple tea light to the flat base, or place a votive candle in a glass cup. You can then use a glue dot to connect these to the pumpkin wine glasses, so there’s no chance of knocking the candle off its perch.
