You get to choose the color, size and density of your pom poms, as well as the length of garland and pom pom spacing, so you should be able to match your style perfectly.

How to Make a Pom Pom Garland
Materials Needed:
What is the best yarn for making pom poms?
When making pom poms for a garland, try to select a yarn that matches the style you’re going for. If you want the pom poms to hang with a bit of a drape, use a thinner, silky yarn. For a chunky style pom pom, get a thicker yarn with more cotton or wool in it.
Tools Needed:
- A Piece of Cardboard (Grab a big piece so you can cut it down to size.)
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle (This is essential! Trust me, I’ve tried without and it’s a nightmare…)
If you’re at all like me and dabble in the yarn crafts you may also have all the necessary materials on hand – which makes it free! Can’t beat that! 😉
How to Make Yarn Pom Poms
STEP 1: Make the Cardboard Tool
You’ll want to decide what size of pom poms you want before cutting and making your cardboard tool.
The “height” of your cardboard tool will determine the diameter of your pom pom.
I used a 3″ diameter for the one on my mantle.
Cut your cardboard at the diameter you want high and twice that wide.
Then cut a line out of the center about half-way.
Should look like this:
If you’d prefer, you can get one of these nifty pom pom makers off Amazon and use that instead of cardboard!
STEP 2: Wrap the Yarn
You’ll want to repeat this step for each pom pom on your garland.
First, pinch the end of your yarn at the center of the cardboard and then repeatedly wrap the yarn around the short length of your cardboard tool.
The more you wrap around it, the denser your pom-pom will end up.
I did about 100 wraps for mine, but I tend to like the “loose” (or not-so-dense) look.
If you want yours really dense I would double that.
When you’re happy with how many wraps you have, cut the yarn.
How many pom poms are needed for a garland?
I recommend putting a pom pom at least every 4-6″ on your galarnd. So take your final desired length for the garland in feet (example, mine was 8ft long) and multiply that by 2 to get the number of pom poms you need (I made 8×2=16.)
STEP 3: Tie Off the Yarn Ball
Using another short piece of yarn (about 12 inches long) and your yarn needle, thread the short piece of yarn through the center of your cardboard on the far side of your yarn wraps.
To do this, I usually shimmy my wraps of yarn all the way to the cut edge of my cardboard tool.
Then, remove your yarn needle and pull the short piece of yarn tight around the wraps inside the cut of the cardboard and tie all the wraps together.
You want to get this tied as tight as possible because this is what holds your pom pom together.
STEP 4: Cut and Trim
Lastly, pull your pom-pom off the cardboard tool and use scissors to cut all the loops you just created by tying around it.
Once the loops are all cut you can fluff out the pom-pom and do some shape trimming to get it looking nice and round.
You did it! You made an easy (and basically free) pom pom.
Now, go make a few – or fifteen – more… 😉
How to Assemble a Pom Pom Garland
When you’re ready to assemble the garland, use your yarn needle to thread a long string of yarn through the center of all the pom poms and space them out to your liking.
And there you have it! Your garland is ready to hang and enjoy.

When styling your garland, think about what color is going to be best with the feel you’re going for.
Throwing a party and want it to be a fun decoration? Use a bright color like blue or pink!
Decorating for fall? Try orange or cream.

How to Hang a Pom Pom Garland
My favorite way to hang garlands is by small, clear 3M hooks like these.
You could also hang them from tacks or nails in the wall!
