Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Wrap the yarn around your hand
- Cut a 10 inch strand of yarn and place it between your middle and ring fingers.
- Pull the yarn from the back of your hand to your palm and hold both ends with your thumb.
- Wrap the same colour of yarn (colour A) around your hand 50 times. Cut the yarn from the ball (you’ll do this after every colour). After you’ve wrapped the yarn around a few times you don’t have to hold the ends with your thumb anymore.
- Choose a second colour of yarn (colour B) to be the egg’s stripes. Wrap this colour, beside the first, 25 times. Try not to overlap the colours.
- Wrap colour A another 50 times. At this point you may want to push the yarn further down your hand to make room for more yarn.
- Wrap colour B 25 more times, and then colour A for a final 50 times. There should be 200 wraps total.
Step 3: Tie the yarn and cut the loops
- Slide one end of the 10 inch strand back to the front of your hand and loosely tie it around the yarn bundle.
- Slide the yarn off your hand carefully and tie the 10 inch strand in a double knot around the center of the bundle.
- Cut through the loops with fabric scissors, creating a rough pom pom shape.
Step 4: Trim the pom pom
- Trim the pom pom to look like a cylinder.
- Use tweezers to separate the yarn colours as best you can, creating the Easter egg’s stripes.
- Trim the center of the egg so that the yarn looks smooth and is equal lengths.
- Trim the top of the egg into a rounded point.
- Cut the bottom of the egg to be more rounded and flat.Make any final cuts and adjustments to even things out.
- Your pom pom Easter egg is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- If you’re making multiple Easter egg pom poms be sure to compare the sizes as you trim them so that they’ll match.
- Comb out the strands of yarn with a pet brush or a fine tooth comb to make a fuzzy/fluffy pom pom Easter egg.
Do I have to use my hand to make pom pom Easter eggs?
We like to use our hand to make pom poms since it doesn’t require another tool. But if you want to keep your hands free there are definitely other ways to make a pom pom.
You can buy a special pom pom maker, or cut a rectangle out of cardboard to help you. Check out our step by step guide on how to make a pom pom for full instructions.
What type of yarn is best for pom pom Easter eggs?
We made our pom pom Easter eggs with worsted weight (medium, size 4) acrylic yarn. It’s the most common yarn size and can be used to make almost anything.
You can also make your pom poms with bulky or super bulky yarn. The thicker the yarn, the less times you’ll need to wrap it for the same size pom pom. Similarly, if you use a thinner yarn be sure to wrap it more times.
What scissors are best for making an Easter pom pom?
We like to use fabric scissors when making pom poms. Fabric scissors, also known as sewing shears, have long blades that are very sharp.
If you don’t have fabric scissors, regular scissors will do, but you might have a harder time cutting through the loops of yarn and trimming the ends nicely.
How do I make a speckled Easter egg pom pom?
You can see a speckled/polka dot Easter egg in some of our photos. To make this style of Easter egg wrap 3 strands of yarn around your hand at one time.
Grab 2 strands of one colour (the main colour) and one strand of another (the dot colour). Hold them together and wrap them around your hand 70 times.

Use your Easter egg pom poms as part of an egg hunt, hang them on your Easter tree, or string them onto a garland. You can make these super cute pom pom Easter eggs with scrap yarn in spring pastel shades, or in bright vibrant colours — whatever you’d like!
