At the festival of Sukkot, a decorated hut or ‘Sukkah’ is built in the home or garden. This Sukkah provided food and temporary shelter to the Israelites while they spent 40 years living in the desert.

The book of Esther in the Old Testament tells the story of the Jewish people being saved from their Persian rulers. The villain in the story is Haman, the king’s advisor. When he appears in a play or in storytelling it is traditional to use a ‘grogger’ or noisemaker to drown out his name.
