Handprint Spider Craft
Handprint crafts make such fun keepsakes. You’ll definitely want to write the date on the back of your handprint spider so you can look back and remember just how small their hand used to be!
This is a fun craft for younger kids that teaches hand eye coordination. Both the threading and the hole punch are great for increasing hand strength and fine motor skills.
Real spiders can definitely be creepy, but this handprint spider is super cute. Spiders and their intricate webs just scream Halloween! And a personalized craft is such a fun way to celebrate the spooky season!

How can I display this craft?
You can leave the string long and use it to hang the spider web. Or you can cut off the extra yarn and place the plate on a shelf or mantel. You could also put a magnet on the back of the paper plate and hang it on the fridge.
What if I don’t want to paint my handprint spider?
Instead of painting the paper plate, try colouring it with crayons or markers. You can add stickers, rhinestones, or glitter to the web and/or the spider. The spider also looks great covered in pompoms or fuzzy fabric!
How to Make a Handprint Spider Craft
Equipment:
Instructions:
Step 1: Make a handprint spider
- Fold a black piece of construction paper in half.
- With the folded edge facing you, place your child’s hand so that only the top third of their palm is on the paper. Trace their four fingers with a pencil (don’t trace the thumb!).
- Cut out the handprint and open it up to reveal a spider!
- Use glue tape to attach googly eyes to the spider.
Step 2: Paint the paper plate
- Add some blue paint (or whatever colour you want!) onto a paper plate.
- Use a paintbrush to spread the paint around, adding more paint if necessary. Leave the edges only partially covered for a distressed look.
Step 3: Make the spider web
- Wait about 30 minutes for the paint to dry. Then take a one hole punch and punch a hole every 3 to 5 ridges along the outer edge of the paper plate.
- Wind black yarn around the plate 7 or 8 times then cut.
- Remove the yarn from the plate and tie one end of it through one of the holes, knotting it in place.
- On the other loose end of the yarn, make a knot, to make it easier to thread the yarn through the holes.
- Start threading the yarn across the plate. Push it through a hole and then back across the front. Then through another hole, and back across the front.
- Continue threading the yarn across the paper plate until you’re happy with your web pattern. Then knot the yarn in the last hole. You can either keep the remaining string to hang the plate, or you can cut it off.
- Place the spider in its newly created web.
- Your handprint spider craft is complete!
