Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the pom pom
- Choose a colour of yarn for your monster’s body.Cut a piece of yarn (about 8 – 10 inches long) and slide it between your ring and middle fingers.
- Wrap the yarn around all four of your fingers approximately 200 times.
- Cut off the yarn from the ball.
- Tie the 8 inch piece of yarn that was between your fingers loosely around the yarn bundle. Now carefully slide the yarn off your fingers.
- Pull the yarn tight and tie it in a double knot around the center of the bundle.
- Using fabric scissors (or other sharp scissors), cut through the loops of yarn to create a rough pom pom shape.
- Give the pom pom a “haircut”, trimming and shaping it until it’s a round ball shape.
Step 3: Cut out the felt pieces
- Cut a half circle shape from black felt for the monster’s mouth.
- Cut a triangle tooth, that will fit in the monster’s mouth, from white felt.
- Cut two horns from orange felt (or another colour of your choice). You can cut them freehand, or cut one and use it as a template to cut the second one.
- Cut 2 rectangles from orange felt. Round off one of the short edges on each. These will be the monster’s feet.
Step 4: Attach the pieces to the monster
- Add hot glue to the back of the monster’s mouth.
- Place the mouth on the bottom half of the pom pom.
- Attach the tooth on top of the mouth, pointing in whatever direction you’d like.
- Separate the yarn on top of the monster’s body, creating a little trench for the felt to slide into.Add glue to the bottom of a felt horn, on both sides (front and back).
- Add the horn into the trench and push the yarn back together to keep it in place. Repeat for the second horn.
- Add a generous dot of glue to the back half of the foot (by the straight edge).
- Attach the foot to the bottom of the pom pom monster, and then repeat for the second foot.
- Add googly eyes above the monster’s mouth, using hot glue.
- Your pom pom monster is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- If you use thicker chunky yarn, you can wrap it around your fingers half as many times. Similarly, if you use thinner yarn, you’ll have to wrap it around your fingers more times to create a full looking pom pom.
- Use 2 (or more) colours of yarn to make a multi-coloured monster! See our pom pom fish tutorial for tips on how to do this.
Do I need a pom pom maker to make pom pom monsters?
It’s so easy to make a pom pom just using your hand, so we don’t find it necessary to buy an extra gadget. But if you’d like to keep your hands free, you can buy a plastic pom pom maker.
Or you can even make your own pom pom maker by cutting a rectangle out of cardboard and wrapping the yarn around the cardboard instead of your fingers.
What yarn is best for making pom pom monsters?
We used medium weight acrylic yarn to make our pom pom monsters. Acrylic yarn is nice for making pom poms because it doesn’t split at the end like cotton yarn does. (See our pom pom dandelions post for an example of how easily cotton yarn separates.)
We’ve also used chunky yarn in the past (to make pom pom penguins, for example), which is another great option. Chunky yarn is, as the name describes, nice and thick, meaning you only have to wrap the yarn around your fingers half as many times!
How do I design my pom pom monster?
First you’ll need to choose your monster’s colour. You can make it any colour you like, or even several colours! Make sure you choose a felt colour for the horns and feet as well.
Then you’ll need to decide on the type of face it will have. Will your monster have a mouth? Or just teeth? Will it smile? Or look mean and scary?
Finally, you can decide on the eyes. Your monster can have 2 regular eyes, one big eye, or many small ones! It’s up to you!
What if I don’t have felt?
If you don’t have felt, you can use card stock for the details. Or use cardboard from a cereal box and use markers to make it the colours you want.
You can also use sheets of craft foam or pipe cleaners instead of felt. You can even twist pipe cleaners to make antennae and a tail!
