Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
-
Gather your supplies and materials to make the wreath.
-
You’ll also need to gather all the colours of yarn you want to use.We made our wreath with bright shades of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
Step 2: Prepare the wreath form and yarn
-
Grab a piece of cardboard from your recycling. Trace an 8 inch plate or bowl onto the cardboard. Then place a smaller bowl inside this circle (ours was 1-1/4 inches smaller), lining it up so there’s an even amount of space around it. Trace the bowl.
-
Cut out the wreath form. You can use scissors to do this, or place the cardboard on a cutting mat and use a craft knife.
-
Cut your yarn into 16 inch long pieces, and create bundles of 8 strands for each of your colours. You’ll need multiple bundles of each colour — we used 7 bundles of each of our 6 colours (42 bundles total).
Step 3: Add the first yarn bundle to the wreath
-
Choose your starting colour (we used red) and fold the bundle in half. (Remember, each bundle should have 8 pieces of 16 inch long yarn).
-
Place the yarn under your cardboard wreath form with the loop pointing out.
-
Bring the yarn ends over top of the cardboard form and through the loop.
-
Arrange the yarn so it looks neat and then pull to tighten the knot around the wreath.
Step 4: Repeat, adding the rest of the yarn
-
Add the next colour in your pattern (orange) beside the first. Push them together so there’s no gaps between the colours.Add the second bundle to the right of the last for a counter-clockwise pattern, or to the left for clockwise.
-
Repeat with the rest of your colours (yellow, green, blue, purple) and then start the pattern over again.
-
Repeat, tying on tassel bundles until your wreath is full.
Step 5: Trim the tassels and add a hanger
-
Trim the ends of the bundles to be even. Our tassels are about 4-1/2 inches total (2-1/2 inches from the knot).
-
Cut a 30 inch piece of yarn, fold it in half, and tie the ends into a knot.
-
Make room between two of the tassels (one of them matching the hanger colour).Place the tied yarn under the wreath with the loop towards the inside.
-
Bring the loop over the wreath. Open the yarn below the knot and push the loop through the strands.
-
Pull the loop up until the hanger is tightened around the wreath.
-
Your rainbow tassel wreath is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Choose colours and shades of yarn you like or that match your home decor. Pastel colours look really nice for spring or a baby’s room.
- If your cardboard isn’t thick/strong enough you can glue 2 or 3 layers of thin cardboard together to make the wreath form.
What’s the easiest way to make yarn bundles for the tassel wreath?
We found it easiest to wrap the yarn around a piece of cardboard cut to 8 inches (half the length of the strands). You can also wrap the yarn around a book if you have one the right size.
Wrap the yarn around the cardboard however many times for the number of strands you need (ie. 8 wraps for 8 strands). Then cut across the yarn to create a bundle of 16 inch strands.
How do I keep the tassels from drooping?
If your tassels are flopping down when you hang your wreath, try cutting them a bit shorter. The shorter the tassels, the less they’ll droop.
Alternatively, you could also add more yarn into each of your bundles when you make your wreath. The thicker the tassel, the more the wreath will lay flat on the wall.
What size rainbow tassel wreath does this make?
Our rainbow tassel wreath has a diameter of about 14 inches.
Do I have to use cardboard for the tassel wreath form?
If you don’t have cardboard you can also use an embroidery hoop or any other type of wreath form to make this tassel wreath. Try using one made from metal or styrofoam. Just keep in mind that the thicker the wreath form, the longer your yarn bundles will need to be.
What type of yarn is used for a tassel wreath?
We used worsted weight yarn (medium, size 4) to make our rainbow tassel wreath. Thicker chunky yarn would also work nicely to create a full looking wreath.
Can I hang this wreath on an outside door?
We recommend hanging your tassel wreath indoors, since yarn doesn’t hold up well to rainy or snowy weather. If you have a covered porch that’s protected from the elements, the wreath will probably last a season outside, but humidity and moisture will still affect it. We think the wreath looks beautiful hanging on an inside door!
This rainbow tassel wreath is super cute homemade decor that’s really inexpensive to make. It’s the perfect decoration for home, a party, or celebrating Pride Month!
